The last week of school looms.  I can’t believe the year has zoomed past so quickly – must be the holidays which keeps that pace going.  It has felt very, very busy; not hectic but certainly much more active than my final days at Reading Recovery.  I’m so glad to have made the change when I did.

So the highlights of my reading this year.  Well, I’ve tried to read quite a few from the YA fiction at school.  What’s been memorable?  Probably one of the first books I read- Meg Rossof’s ‘How I live now’ made a big impact.  Such a direct voice of the main character; the setting in a world where teenagers were ‘doing it for themselves’ with the added complexity of a time which seemed crossed between the second world war and now.  A novel about growing up and facing lifethreatening challenges while also developing into a touching love story.

‘Jinx’ by Margaret Wild was another interesting YA read.  This time it was the text type that made it memorable – a verse novel which although it was brief actually told quite a complex and lengthy story.  A girl who believes she is dangerous to love because boyfriends and others she loves die.
